Weekend Of Work

Friday 27th - Monday 30th October

Over the weekend, I decided to do Jims work ready for Tuesday. I managed to look at a book I got out of the library, which were based on layout, typography, etc. I scanned the pages in for me to look at when in his lesson. I also looked on the Internet for basic information on In Design,  such as how to use some of the tool, and the colour use and how to look at images etc. I then did a blog on what I learnt by looking at these and about In Design.
I also started lee's work even though I only have him on Wednesday. I printed some images off for Austin Kleon, Renè Magritte and some of myself that I wanted to show how I stole the artist work.
I decided to do a mindmap on myself and what inspires me, bit I used watercolour to make it look better than the boring white page.
I also looked more into Austin Kleon as I found him so interesting with how he talks about his work and other artists opinions and quotes.
I found that Kleon has made a book called 'steal like an artist' which I am intrigued by and would like to buy.

Thursday Work

Thursday 26th September

To start my Thursday, I managed to complete my work for Rachael's lesson. I needed to write about the artist that I chose, and also stick down the quotes that I found, which will hopefully help me in my work and get me thinking of ideas that I can create for my final.
After Dave's lesson I went to the library to research on my agencies and consultants, which I haven't managed to catch up on. I found it quite interesting to learn about each agency, and to learn about the clients they work with. I didn't manage to get many done, but I'm hoping to get them done this week if I can.
Rachael's lesson was very interesting and a little bit more aimed at the arty side, which I was happy about as I feel I've not worked with ink for a couple of months. We all went into the Textiles room and experimented with screen printing, using different materials to print onto, using different colours and layering. I enjoyed this a lot and felt more like me getting messy and having paint all over my hands.
We then went into our base room and looked at the quotes that we all found and began braking them down into smaller words and thoughts when you think of a certain word;
Find: hide, adventure, search, found, hide and seek.

Branding. Geneology. More Branding.

Wednesday 25th September

Was determined to finish my branding work as it was getting on top of me. So in Dave's lesson I carried on writing and sticking. I didn't have that much to do, just write all the information and good and bad points. Basically everything I had wrote down in my note book. Ugh.

I thought I would have time in Lee's session to complete the branding,  but he decided to talk and discuss about Magritte's work, look at what work we got done and then give us work for next week. However, he was proud with the work I did for him so that made me happy.

We had the first soap box of the year today and it was Dean. He decided to do it on Chagall, we visited an exhibition on him the other week. It was good to see how it will be done, so feel more relaxed about doing mine, however I'd rather not do it at all if I'm honest.
Had Claire last lesson, so decided to go in the mac room and research the artist I chose for Rachael's lesson, which took 10 minutes at the most. Then finished my branding research.
Woo so glad Its done, just hope that it's correct.

Tiring Tuesday!

Tuesday 24th September 2013

Tuesdays are usually a relaxed day to start the week off. In Jims lesson I managed to finish off my illustration based on Julien Opie's work, which wasn't that bad, I enjoyed finishing it off, and think it turned out quite good for first proper time on Illustrator.

We then had study support which was meant to last an hour but only last half an hour. I thought we would go there to get taught how to write reviews but apparently we go there with our written review then they check it.. Bit weird.
Anyway, we did this pointless question thing on different sayings from different languages.. That was weird.

Then, I had the chance to catch up and finish Lee's work, the research based on Renè Magritte, which I managed to do 6 pages in 3 hours, including notes and writing. Fair proud.

Weekend of work

Friday 20th - Monday 23rd September

Over the weekend I decided to do a range of different things, making sure that if I got bored or annoyed with doing something that I would do something else. I found that this worked for me and made me concentrate a lot more on my work that I was doing.

I managed to start Lee's work and find a movement book which I bought last year, and found information on Renè Magritte as well as the movement Surrealism. I scanned, hightlighted and then wrote notes on what I learnt.

I also printed some pictures off the Internet which I found inspiring to me, and will hopefully help me with my work in the future.

I managed to find another artist for Rachaels lesson. His name is Ray Fenwick and he is a typographer,  he is very inspiring and I love how he uses colour in his work.

Easy Day

Thursday 19th September.

I started the day with Dave having a chat with us about branding and even showed us how a brand can be laid out onto paper, business cards, cups, fax paper etc. Every time he explains and talks about branding, agencies and consultants, I'm beginning to understand what they are and what I will be working towards doing to give me enough skills to get a job in the industry.

I wrote down some more information on the artists for Rachael, to make sure that it is complete. Think of the good and bad points of the brands I chose, then finally looked at Rachael's brief and tried to think of different quotes, sayings, lyrics that I can create a piece from.

Work, Work, Work.

Wednesday 18th September.

Managed to get into uni earlier than I have been doing the past week, this meant I could have some toast before lesson started. Yes!
I managed to concentrate a lot more on what I needed to get done in the morning now, which was a trip to the library to research the brands I have chosen; Disney, Louis Vuitton, Nike and Audi.

After an hour and a half of internet searching, we had Lee for the first time this year. He introduced to us the things that we're going to be learning and what is needed from us. After that I made my way to the library to research on Magritte and his work. I was unable to get a book so I wrote some notes on him to understand his way of working and what he's inspired by etc.

We then had Claire, she is an amazing tutor, and she explained how her lessons are going to work and what we needed to be getting on with, which was anything that we needed to catch up on or needed to complete. I chose to research my artists that I chose for Rachael's lesson; Abby Diamond, Steven Pattison and Rosie Hardy

When I got home I managed to arrange all the imagery I printed for Rachael's lesson, as well as the information on each one, such as; materials they like to use, and what inspires them, and my opinions of there work and why I chose to look into there work.

It has been a very productive day, but I am happy with the amount of work I got done.

Beginning to understand.

Tuesday 17th September

Today we started in Jim's lesson working on Julian Opie's way of working. This included bringing in a image of our self and adding line and colour on illustrator. At first I found it quite hard to understand as I have never used illustrator, but found that the tools are similar to Photoshop. I managed to get all the lines in place around the face, hair, and eyes, nose and mouth.

In Dave's lesson I wrote some notes down on branding and about the Hats, Black hat, Yellow hat, Red hat and White hat. There is also Blue and Green hat, however we don't need to know/ write about these yet. The White hat is all the main information and facts on the product, or in this case the Brand. Black hat is all the bad points on the product, or brand, that doesn't work, doesn't look right, maybe colours that are used, etc. Yellow hat is all the good points on the product, or brand, that works, looks right, the colours that are used, etc. The Red hat is the emotion that the product, or brand, brings, such as feeling happy or sad, or angry, etc. This is very important, especially when designing, because as a Graphic Designer you need to be able to communicate to the audience in a range of ways, such as emotion to get your point across.

I managed to get into the library in the afternoon and print of a range of imagery for the brands that I have chose, which I then got cut out and stuck into my book ready for the white hat, black hat and yellow hat.

Chagall Exhibition

Today I visited Liverpool Tate to look at Chagall Modern Master, which explored his unique style mixing modernist influences and his native Jewish Russian culture. I'm not particularly interested in exhibitions, however I was moved by his work and loved how he could look at someone, an animal, or a landscape and make it his own.
When I first walked around the exhibition, I began to notice that he likes to use green, yellow, red, and blue in his work, but with the same tone of colour. I found it very striking and began to enjoy looking at his colourful work.

Chagall's style of working is very unusual, such as painting the head upside down, making the body shape curve, painting people as green or pink. Why does he do this? Show emotion? Expression?

Julien Opie

Julien Opie's work is very different to many Artist's work. He doesn't add much detail, just simple lines to show the face shape and where the mouth and nose are. I think the bright colours that he uses behind the faces, and the colour of the t-shirt, or the hair makes the piece stand out and makes it eye catching.
I do like his work but I think they look better when there's a group of them, rather than just one. With the coloured background on a handful of them, they make each other stand out and makes you want to look at them for longer.

The stress begins!!

Today is basically a 'music in, world out' sorta day. Read through my brief with Dave and everyone to try and understand everything. The brief is so much easier to understand now and I know what I need to do and what to achieve, however my brain is deciding to switch off,(it never does this!) So need a little time to get into a routine, and to make my brain do some work.

Had a couple hours free in the afternoon to do what I needed to do, so I went to the library to get some graphic books to help me understand more on branding, companies and corporate identity.

For the last couple of hours, we got Rachael's Brief which I am looking forward to! Love illustration and the ability to create work with any media and techniques. Should be fun!

More homework though! 3 artists for next week. Bring it on!

First Blog

My name is Sophie Worsfold and I have been interested in  Art and Design. I like to hand render my work, like using watercolour and pencils. I also like illustration and using photoshop to then edit my work and make it look professional.

This is an illustration that is created by Beaucoupzero. I have added this image because I love the range of colour that has been used and the detail with the lines and patterns. I also like how   there is something new that you see the longer you look at it.
