Media work

Friday 15th - Monday 18th November

Over the past couple of days I printed images out for my Quote for Rachael's lesson. I printed the images out onto card to make it thicker and for the paper to absorb ink and watercolour. I added different colour of watercolour and ink to different pictures and experimented with how I applied it.
I used hand stitching to put some images together. I then used some negative film and stitched them onto the images. Then more I stitched the better I became and quicker I became.
I did the design sheet for Jim, adding the logo and a black and white logo as well as a t-shirt design that I'll be aiming for.

Edit, Edit, Edit

Thursday 14th November

In the morning, we all had to design a dance poster for the performing arts. We were able to create anything that we wanted as long as we had the information such as where it was being held at, what time and how much the tickets are.
I created two posters as the first one I created I found it quite boring and thought I could create a better colourful one. However, I ended up using the first original I created.
After lunch, I started editing some images for Rachael's lesson. I have learnt a lot from the Photoshop book I took out of the library.
I managed to talk to Rachael in lesson and get some notes on what I need to develop and which way I need to take my ideas. This has helped me get a lot more ideas and think of ways I want to take them to create a final.

Experimenting and Improving

Wednesday 13th November

I researched into editorial designs and layouts. The ones that I found I then placed into a document for me to print and put into my sketchbook for research and better understanding of what I need to produce.
I researched more into my movement Futurism and the different areas that it targets like painting, sculpture, graphics design, music. This helps me get a better understanding of the movement that I am studying and get a better understanding that any movement can go in all different fields. It also helps me this how a movement is linked to Graphics.
I edited some images that I took for Rachael's lesson, I found that even though I am not that experienced that I did a good job.
It just proves with time and experimenting your skills will improve and you will get better at what you love.

Learning and Progressing

Tuesday 12th November

In Jim's lesson I work on the logo for the Glastonbury Festival. I finally figured out how to the grunge effect on type, which I have been trying to learn all weekend and couldn't find an easy and simple way to do it.
I then figured out how to change the colour of the grunge as I thought it has to stay black and white which I wasn't please about. However, I started experimenting more with the colours and with the curves and levels of the type to make the word look its best.
All lesson I experimented with different textures and different type faces to see which looks better and I feel fits the Glastonbury Festival.
At study support, he didn't change much, just some odd changes which I was then able to hand in.
Dave then had a talk with us all about the next project, which I wrote down some notes to make sure that I fully understood what my aim was.
Later on in the day I looked at the Photoshop cs6 book I took out of the Library. This will give me a better understanding of Photoshop and help me develop my skills. This also makes me be independent by helping my skills and techniques to push my work and make it a lot better.

CS6 Stress!

Friday 8th - Monday 11th November

I did my second review and I based it on the Rob Ryan exhibition that I visited in London. I found this review quite hard to write about as there wasn't much in the gallery, and I found it hard not to write it in a first person, however I found the work very inspiring and amazing to talk about. This review has helped me to learn how to write about a range of areas in a topic.
I did some research on how to edit typography for Jim's lesson. I've been getting used to Photoshop so I found some of the tools and techniques on how to edit quite hard. I decided to watch some lessons on how to edit step by step to make my knowledge of Photoshop even stronger.
I found it very stressful because I don't know much about Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I decided to get a book out of the library to learn more about cs6.
I didn't manage to get as much as I wanted to this weekend but I will make sure that I catch up on the work that I need to.

Busy Busy Day

Thursday 7th November

Today we had our presentations, all of us in a group of 3 having different things to talk about. We had to do a PowerPoint, Hand-out and a A3 Poster. I was in a group with Dean and Simone, and we had to talk about Pentagram. I found that we had an advantage seeing as we went to London and visited them couple of weeks before. I was pretty nervous, even though I know everyone on my course. I think it's because I can feel everyone's eyes on me and I was scared in case I made a mistake. We was 3rd out of 5 groups so I was glad when it was over. I think I could have looked up more but I think I would of messed it up if I did.
By Half 11 everyone was done, which was a relief for everyone.
After dinner I worked on Rachael's work, looking at tutorials to edit my pictures I have took.
At 2, we handed in our folder and sketchbook to Dave, signing to make sure that he knows we've gave them to him.
After that we listened to Megan's Soap box, which was quite rushed and not properly explained so I wasn't sure what she was discussing. I think that she had a reasonable discussion, she just didn't explain about the movement and what it does.
In Rachael's, lesson we went into the print room to do some etching. I thought it would last for an hour so then I would be able to go back in our room to do work. However, it took us the whole lesson to etch and print with, as well as clean up. I didn't really enjoy etching as I've done etching in the past and it's never really appealed to me, but it was good to do something different than researching.

Working On My Folder

Wednesday 6th November

All day I have been working on my folder, trying to get things organised and sorted so I can print any pages out when I get home and then be able to check if I'm missing anything. I managed to get a lot done I thought, considering I got everything printed in 2 days, which I need to learn from and organise my time a lot more so I can get things completed a week before deadline.
I also worked on my sketchbook adding the odd annotation and sorting some thumbnails out.
I also managed to print out 4 more artists for Rachael's work. The only thing I need to do is find another artist and write about them all. Quite a bit behind but proud of my progress.

Glastonbury Logo and PDP Folder

Tuesday 5th November

Today I worked on my logo ideas for Jim's lesson. I tried to think more about Glastonbury and different unusual ideas compared to the original logo. These didn't work out at first so I decided to change it and think about the Pyramid stage and think about ideas using that. I got a couple of ideas down and think some looked good but I don't think I will have enough time to developed the ideas and create something I am proud of. My other idea that I had was to just keep it simple and just have 'Glastonbury' as the logo and have a nice font.

After dinner I worked on my PDP Folder, working on the pages on my laptop, and how they're set out. I managed to set my logo nice onto the page and have enough space for a title and any writing. I designed it on InDesign, still getting used to the tools but I think it worked out quite well.
I completed all together the contents page, and all sections, activity log pages and started the agencies.

Sketchbooks, Sketchbooks, Sketchbooks.

Friday 1st - Monday 4th November

Over the weekend, I printed my logo out 6 times and laminated each one so I could stick them on to my folder and sketchbooks. This was difficult because I had to cut the circle the best I could making sure it looks correct.
I annotated the sketchbook for Jims lesson, making sure I wrote about what was similar with each hand out,  what worked and what didn't. After this I started looking at different type that I can use for the logo, making sure that it was bold and eye catching. This made me trigger ideas and think of how I could actually design the logo. I want something simple yet effective when placed on the brochure, poster and t-shirt.
I also printed some more sheets off VLE and placed them into my folder in the order that they say.
I will have to work hard on getting everything done for Thursday and make sure that I'm doing it correct.

London Trip! Thursday

Got up early today.. But not as early as I usually would for uni. We met everyone at half 9 and went to McCann for 10, which is round the corner of the hotel. McCann was very different to Pentagram, and I loved how they work and how their building is set out. After this we had the chance to go where we wanted, so we went to Rob Ryan Gallery, which was great. To see his work in person was amazing, especially to see the detail on his work. After this we went to the market to experience London.
We had to get back around 6ish at the hotel in time to get to the train station and get on the train home. Was a long journey but it didn't take that long as everyone was tired from the day they fell asleep.
Was a very good trip to London and I would go again any time soon, was amazing.

PowerPoint Presentation

Thursday 31st October

Today I went into university to show Dave the PowerPoint that I have done for the presentation that we need to show next week. At first, I thought my presentation looked good but was missing something. Dave had some things he asked me to change and to add and I'm glad that he did because this made me realise what I need to concentrate on when creating PowerPoints.
After this, I went home and sorted all the different things that he asked me to do, such as making sure I included the right information and presented the layout correctly.

Futurism Research and Annotation

Today I looked more into the artist that are involved in Futurism. I looked at the 6 main artist wwho started futurism, trying to get some main information on each one, as well as imagery of their work they have created.
I also try to rearrange my book for Jim and annotate a little bit more about each page and why certain things work with posters and leaflets.

Research, Research, Research

Tuesday 29th October

Today I did some research on festivals for Jims lesson. I wanted to get a better understanding of what I am going to be designing and what work I should be looking into. I printed these images I collected and stuck them down in my book, so when I start designing I can look at them for inspiration.
Today I also finished the PowerPoint for the presentation that is next week. However, I have to go in in Thursday to present it infront of Dave to make sure that its correct.

Presentation and Scanning

Friday 25th - Monday 28th October

Decided to have a rest on Friday seeing as I had a long to days away at London and just felt that I needed to relax a little.
I started on my presentation, which was the PowerPoint that had to be created. I already had the information I just needed to organise the layout and add the text and images. I got more than half done which I am very proud of.
I scanned in some of the hand outs that I collected while in London, as I wanted the back of them as they give a good example of how to show bands, with the type used and layout. I stuck some of these into my sketchbook so then all I needed to do was add more and annotate.

London Trip! Wednesday.

Wednesday 23rd October

Today was the first of two days at London. I got to uni at 8, got on a coach which felt like it took forever to get to Manchester, then got onto the train to London. Once we got to London we had some time to relax for a bit before we went on the underground to get to Pentagram. It was a good experience and amazing to see something new. To think that hopefully I could be working in a place like that. Afterwards, went for some food and eventually got back to the hotel. I was a very productive day and was good to do something new.

Photoshop Skills, and Salford Library

Tuesday 22nd October

Today in Jim's lesson we had to begin by going to the Library and collecting some books/ a book on logos, type, layouts etc. I already have quite a few books at home that I use for ideas, so I decided to only get one out. I got one on logos and brand layouts to help me with my work.
We then went back into the Mac room where we had the chance to experiment with different tools on Photoshop and try something new. We looked on the website; http://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/ where there are a range of tutorials and articles on different things you can learn on Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I decided to do a retro cityscape, which I feel for a first I think I did well.

After Jim's lesson we had dinner then met to go to Salford. Seeing as our course is with Salford, I think it's a good thing that we will be able to have access to the library there. We had the chance to look around and look at the books that are there. We just need to get our card soon and then we will be able to go when we need to.

Good Productive Weekend

Friday 18th - 21st October

I managed to work with my photography over the weekend, and get some good pictures done. I worked on the word 'Memories' and collected some old pictures of me as a young girl, with different expressions on my face, and different colour clothing, so I could experiment a bit and have some fun with it. I tried with some of the images to bend my back in awkward places to represent Karrah Kobus and her way of working. This took a whole day to change my clothes, get a good range of images that I liked and to then go through them and print them out. I am happy with the end result though and my ideas are developing more.

I then did some research on Festivals and posters that have been designed and how they place the text and imagery. I got a range, so that they aren't all aimed on rock, or pop. I also collected some typography to work with and the colours that have been used. I then looked t bands and how they have done their logo, and type they've used to represent their sort of music.

Annotation. Lots of Annotation.

Thursday 17th October

Today I decided to annotate my Branding book on the different ideas I have for my logo. I annotated the quick ideas I first had with the watercolour and black type. I said what works on each and what doesn't. I then annotated the quick ideas I had for the layout for my letters, or the pages that all my work will go onto. Obviously these need to be thought of a lot more and I need some more professional ideas. I then annotated the changing of the colour of 2 logo ideas that I thought where the best out of all my ideas. From this I annotated the watercolour experiments that I did, saying which ones work and which ones don't work. I ended up scanning these watercolours in so I could put black type on over the top to experiment, I also want to add white type instead of black. When I had the chance to go onto the Mac and edit the white type onto the shapes, I then decided that these where the best ones and printed them out, asking my peers which one they thought looked the best.

All this annotating took quite a while to do, so after this I decided to look at my artist research for Rachael's lesson, making sure that I annotated enough onto the pages on the other artists I've picked. I then looked at 3 quotes that I want to begin to show more ideas for and drew some thumbnails, of my ideas. I then left a space for me to add imagery once I did them, as I am looking to do some photography work.

Proud Uni Student

Wednesday 16th October

I'm fair proud of how much work I got done today. I began researching more into Pentagram, as I've not researched as much as I should have done. I looked at some books that Dave has on Pentagram, and wrote down some notes in my notebook and on my laptop. I found out when they started the business and who started it and why they named it Pentagram.
In Lee's lesson, I researched more into futurism, especially about the artists that where involved. I'm being too understand a lot more about futurism and beginning to enjoy it.
To end the day, I went into the Mac room and started my design for my logo using the watercolour marks I created the other day. I added on the type and made it white instead of Black, however the mac doesn't have the same type faces as my laptop so this meant I had to find a new type face.  I love how my logo ideas are going and think it will come together really well for the first project of uni.

Odd Random Tuesday

Tuesday 15th October

Today I worked more on my magazine in Jim's lesson, rearranging the type and adding colour. We also learned how to get an image and edit it on photoshop for it to then go on InDesign. I then went to study support to get some advice on my review that needs to be done for Thursday. While we was waiting for the tutor to get to each of us he gave us a sheet which had sentences on and we had to change the sentence so it didn't have 'you' in. This didn't make sense to me. I didn't see the point to be honest, but its something to practice with I guess.
In Dave's lesson, I used the scans of the watercolour I did the night before and added in ttpe using a black fine liner. I used a different type font for each one to see which one looks better and which stands out better.
I'm starting to enjoy what I am doing in lesson now, especially because the brand is based on me so I can design it however I want.

Typography

I have decided to look at different sort of typography work, such as hand rendered type, and computer based. I have found a few that I like and some that I don't like. I think that it is a good idea to look at type you don't like because if I became a Graphic Designer I may have to use/create something that I'm not keen on.

I think this type is very elegant and creative. The white on the dark blue background give it a different effect and really catches your eyes. I think by filling in the type with pattern makes it stand out from the rest and really finish the type.

I don't like this type, I think that the letters are to close to each other that
you can't really tell what it says unless you concentrate on
it. At first I didn't know what it said. I don't think the pattern
in the letters work either, especially with the blue
                                                     background.

Weekend of Work

Friday 11th - 14th October

I managed to sort out a way of putting images onto my blog. Finally!
Every time I tried to post an image onto the blog using my laptop for some reason it wouldn't allow it. That is why I have just had text and no image. I have decided to use my phone to publish the photos as its easier and quicker. Now you can finally look at some work I've been doing.
I have also decided to start an instagram page for just all my design work so if anyone's interested please have a look; http://instagram.com/sophiedesignwork
I managed to research some typography for Jims lesson, which I found certain things on them that I like and think work better than others.
I stuck down some images I printed out based on Futurism and wrote some notes about futurism. I am hoping to write about other artist in different fields such as Film, Music, Graphic Design, etc. I am going to be working on this movement for the next couple of weeks, and be creating an iMovie for my final, so I would like to collect as much information as I can.
I also worked on my brand, and started a logo idea using watercolour and putting type on the top using a black fine liner. I would like to scan in the watercolour and edit the type over the top using white than black, but I will only be able to do this when I get into the mac room.
I then researched into Pentagram for the presentation that I have to do. I found some websites with information, however I will have to look at some books to get more information.

Quotes, Ideas and Drawings.

Thursday 10th October

Today I worked on Rachael's work, as I've not been concentrating much on it, I also feel that I need to work on my ideas and what I want to create for my final, so then I can plan my time out. I sorted out 3 more artist work onto the pages making them look presentable. Then I worked on the quotes that I collected and wrote down ideas and words. From these I drew images ranging from money and hearts. Once I got home I had a chance to add watercolour to the page, which made it look much better.

In need of sleep!

Wednesday 9th October

This morning I attempted to go on the Internet and research either the consultants I need to do, or research into branding, and typography, seeing as I want to do something like this for my brand. Unfortunately the internet wasn't working, so I had to do some work in my books and also organise my diary and note book as I'm getting a little nervous about what needs to be done and how much time I have.
For Lee's lesson he booked a room for us to do our research in. We had 15 minutes to get something to eat and get to the room which is about 5 minutes away. By the time I got out of lesson we had 5 minutes to get food and walk to the room.
Note to self: Don't eat toast and walk up 4 flights of stairs. It does not do good for you.
It wasn't so bad as it gave me a chance to get a range of imagery and learn more on Futurism.
Last lesson I went into the mac room for 5 minutes to organise the work for Jim as I forgot my pen drive yesterday.
I then researched the 3 artists that I chose for Rachael's lesson, getting the background information and what inspires them. I then researched brands which started me thinking of my brand. I managed to get some ideas down which I can't wait to do in more detail in my sketchbook.

Tuesday, 8 October 2013

Usual Tuesday

Tuesday 8th October

Today didn't start off to well. When I got into uni I remembered that I got a new bag and didn't put my pen drive into it. Bad day to forget it because I had my work on it. I then remembered that I forgot my lunch and drink, which wasn't to pleasing.
However, I did a screenshot of my work the week before, so I used this as a template to show what my image looked like and just re did the text.

After Jim's lesson I worked on Lee's work, which was the research on a movement that he gave us. I already had the images I just needed to write some notes.
After this I researched the consultants that I need to catch up on. The agencies didn't take so long to do, so I was hoping these wouldn't either.

Monday, 7 October 2013

Weekend.

Friday 4th - 7th October

Over the weekend, I managed to get Jims work done which was to research something that I have learnt on InDesign, such as a new skill that I can use in the future. I then put this onto my blog writing about it. It is named 'Learning Tools On InDesign; Type on a Path tool' if anyone wants to have a read. I found this tool very interesting and quite easy to do, seeing as I know some of the tools anyway. I am hoping to use this in Jim's lesson and in the future.

I also researched into my movement that Lee gave me which was Futurism. I researched on it using a book that I got from the library and a book that I already bought for myself, (ART The Whole Story), and also looked at Youtube and different websites such as Design is History; Which is a great website to learn about all the different movements and even some artists.

Finally, I researched into some artists for Rachael's lesson, and laid out some pages and wrote some ideas that I had. I need to catch up on Rachael's and hopefully start designing/ experimenting soon or I will get behind on my work.

Learning Tools On InDesign; Type on a Path Tool

As I've said in a previous post, I am not that skilled in InDesign and I am still getting to know the tools. As I've looked at the different tools, I came across 'Type on a path' tool. I've looked into it and found it very interesting and think I could use it in my work, especially if I decide to create a magazine or a poster, I think it would be a very good tool to use.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qy7X87_lZY

I googled 'Type on a path tool' and it came up with a few links to websites and youtube videos. I found that this one above was very good and suitable for beginners such as myself.
You can add type onto a path on a line or a shape, and then still alter the line if it isn't in the place you would like it. I think that the best place to learn about tools on InDesign is Youtube, as you can view what they are doing, I also feel you learn quicker with a visual look on things. I will hopefully be using this tool in the future.

In Design; Trying to understand

I am new to In Design, just as I am to Illustrator and Photoshop, even though I know more on Photoshop, but only on the main information and main tools.
I have used Photoshop in the past 2 years of college and have learnt the basics, however, I have found that Illustrator and In Design have some of the same tools, which makes it easier for me to work with.
I have used In Design only once in the second year of college when I had to create a book on Colour. I found it hard at first, but eventually I got used to the tool. Practice makes Perfect.
I have managed to print off information on the tools, what they do, and on guides, inserting text, and colour etc.

Being ill isn't fun

Thursday 3rd October

I hate being ill, it just makes me feel worthless. Really wanted to get on with work but felt to sick to do much. I decided to research the agencies that I needed to do as this didn't make me feel really weak. I managed to get all of them done, printed images off and stuck them down into my book. Although it didn't seem much it was the best I could do. Hopefully I will be able to get better and get a lot more work done at the weekend.

Wednesday

Wednesday 2nd October

Today we had a talk on branding about how we need to make sure we apply to logo to everything, etc. After the talk I researched more into branding and corporate identity. I found that behance if very good for this and gave me lots of ideas and influences.

For Lee's lesson we talked about the research we collected on Magritte, Kleon and what inspires us. We then got given our movement what we will be doing a presentation on. I got Futurism,  which I was happy about as I didn't want a movement that I have done in the past, or knew background information on.

We then had Dave again as Claire has left to have her baby. He let us just do the work we needed to do, which I was glad because this gave me a chance to research into more artists for Rachael.

It has been a very productive day, I'm proud of what I've been able to get done.

Tuesday, 1 October 2013

Esh.. Usual Tuesday

Tuesday 1st October

Woke up with a headache which I've had for days and not left, so today has felt so long.
In Jims lesson this morning we looked at In Design and some of the tools, we then placed the image that we created on Illustrator last week, and added text about Julian Opie.
I remembered some of the tools that I used last year for In Design which I'm proud of, it also helped me and do my work faster.

I was meant to then have study support but because I've not started my review I didn't need to go, so basically had an hour free to do the work I needed to do.
Dave then explained about how we have to start our own brand design now, but if we have any agencies and consultants to finish them in the time we can.
Finally had an induction on the college and about the VLE and the books we can get out. It did help but by this time my head was killing.

Weekend Of Work

Friday 27th - Monday 30th October

Over the weekend, I decided to do Jims work ready for Tuesday. I managed to look at a book I got out of the library, which were based on layout, typography, etc. I scanned the pages in for me to look at when in his lesson. I also looked on the Internet for basic information on In Design,  such as how to use some of the tool, and the colour use and how to look at images etc. I then did a blog on what I learnt by looking at these and about In Design.
I also started lee's work even though I only have him on Wednesday. I printed some images off for Austin Kleon, Renè Magritte and some of myself that I wanted to show how I stole the artist work.
I decided to do a mindmap on myself and what inspires me, bit I used watercolour to make it look better than the boring white page.
I also looked more into Austin Kleon as I found him so interesting with how he talks about his work and other artists opinions and quotes.
I found that Kleon has made a book called 'steal like an artist' which I am intrigued by and would like to buy.

Thursday Work

Thursday 26th September

To start my Thursday, I managed to complete my work for Rachael's lesson. I needed to write about the artist that I chose, and also stick down the quotes that I found, which will hopefully help me in my work and get me thinking of ideas that I can create for my final.
After Dave's lesson I went to the library to research on my agencies and consultants, which I haven't managed to catch up on. I found it quite interesting to learn about each agency, and to learn about the clients they work with. I didn't manage to get many done, but I'm hoping to get them done this week if I can.
Rachael's lesson was very interesting and a little bit more aimed at the arty side, which I was happy about as I feel I've not worked with ink for a couple of months. We all went into the Textiles room and experimented with screen printing, using different materials to print onto, using different colours and layering. I enjoyed this a lot and felt more like me getting messy and having paint all over my hands.
We then went into our base room and looked at the quotes that we all found and began braking them down into smaller words and thoughts when you think of a certain word;
Find: hide, adventure, search, found, hide and seek.

Branding. Geneology. More Branding.

Wednesday 25th September

Was determined to finish my branding work as it was getting on top of me. So in Dave's lesson I carried on writing and sticking. I didn't have that much to do, just write all the information and good and bad points. Basically everything I had wrote down in my note book. Ugh.

I thought I would have time in Lee's session to complete the branding,  but he decided to talk and discuss about Magritte's work, look at what work we got done and then give us work for next week. However, he was proud with the work I did for him so that made me happy.

We had the first soap box of the year today and it was Dean. He decided to do it on Chagall, we visited an exhibition on him the other week. It was good to see how it will be done, so feel more relaxed about doing mine, however I'd rather not do it at all if I'm honest.
Had Claire last lesson, so decided to go in the mac room and research the artist I chose for Rachael's lesson, which took 10 minutes at the most. Then finished my branding research.
Woo so glad Its done, just hope that it's correct.

Tiring Tuesday!

Tuesday 24th September 2013

Tuesdays are usually a relaxed day to start the week off. In Jims lesson I managed to finish off my illustration based on Julien Opie's work, which wasn't that bad, I enjoyed finishing it off, and think it turned out quite good for first proper time on Illustrator.

We then had study support which was meant to last an hour but only last half an hour. I thought we would go there to get taught how to write reviews but apparently we go there with our written review then they check it.. Bit weird.
Anyway, we did this pointless question thing on different sayings from different languages.. That was weird.

Then, I had the chance to catch up and finish Lee's work, the research based on Renè Magritte, which I managed to do 6 pages in 3 hours, including notes and writing. Fair proud.

Weekend of work

Friday 20th - Monday 23rd September

Over the weekend I decided to do a range of different things, making sure that if I got bored or annoyed with doing something that I would do something else. I found that this worked for me and made me concentrate a lot more on my work that I was doing.

I managed to start Lee's work and find a movement book which I bought last year, and found information on Renè Magritte as well as the movement Surrealism. I scanned, hightlighted and then wrote notes on what I learnt.

I also printed some pictures off the Internet which I found inspiring to me, and will hopefully help me with my work in the future.

I managed to find another artist for Rachaels lesson. His name is Ray Fenwick and he is a typographer,  he is very inspiring and I love how he uses colour in his work.

Easy Day

Thursday 19th September.

I started the day with Dave having a chat with us about branding and even showed us how a brand can be laid out onto paper, business cards, cups, fax paper etc. Every time he explains and talks about branding, agencies and consultants, I'm beginning to understand what they are and what I will be working towards doing to give me enough skills to get a job in the industry.

I wrote down some more information on the artists for Rachael, to make sure that it is complete. Think of the good and bad points of the brands I chose, then finally looked at Rachael's brief and tried to think of different quotes, sayings, lyrics that I can create a piece from.

Work, Work, Work.

Wednesday 18th September.

Managed to get into uni earlier than I have been doing the past week, this meant I could have some toast before lesson started. Yes!
I managed to concentrate a lot more on what I needed to get done in the morning now, which was a trip to the library to research the brands I have chosen; Disney, Louis Vuitton, Nike and Audi.

After an hour and a half of internet searching, we had Lee for the first time this year. He introduced to us the things that we're going to be learning and what is needed from us. After that I made my way to the library to research on Magritte and his work. I was unable to get a book so I wrote some notes on him to understand his way of working and what he's inspired by etc.

We then had Claire, she is an amazing tutor, and she explained how her lessons are going to work and what we needed to be getting on with, which was anything that we needed to catch up on or needed to complete. I chose to research my artists that I chose for Rachael's lesson; Abby Diamond, Steven Pattison and Rosie Hardy

When I got home I managed to arrange all the imagery I printed for Rachael's lesson, as well as the information on each one, such as; materials they like to use, and what inspires them, and my opinions of there work and why I chose to look into there work.

It has been a very productive day, but I am happy with the amount of work I got done.

Beginning to understand.

Tuesday 17th September

Today we started in Jim's lesson working on Julian Opie's way of working. This included bringing in a image of our self and adding line and colour on illustrator. At first I found it quite hard to understand as I have never used illustrator, but found that the tools are similar to Photoshop. I managed to get all the lines in place around the face, hair, and eyes, nose and mouth.

In Dave's lesson I wrote some notes down on branding and about the Hats, Black hat, Yellow hat, Red hat and White hat. There is also Blue and Green hat, however we don't need to know/ write about these yet. The White hat is all the main information and facts on the product, or in this case the Brand. Black hat is all the bad points on the product, or brand, that doesn't work, doesn't look right, maybe colours that are used, etc. Yellow hat is all the good points on the product, or brand, that works, looks right, the colours that are used, etc. The Red hat is the emotion that the product, or brand, brings, such as feeling happy or sad, or angry, etc. This is very important, especially when designing, because as a Graphic Designer you need to be able to communicate to the audience in a range of ways, such as emotion to get your point across.

I managed to get into the library in the afternoon and print of a range of imagery for the brands that I have chose, which I then got cut out and stuck into my book ready for the white hat, black hat and yellow hat.

Chagall Exhibition

Today I visited Liverpool Tate to look at Chagall Modern Master, which explored his unique style mixing modernist influences and his native Jewish Russian culture. I'm not particularly interested in exhibitions, however I was moved by his work and loved how he could look at someone, an animal, or a landscape and make it his own.
When I first walked around the exhibition, I began to notice that he likes to use green, yellow, red, and blue in his work, but with the same tone of colour. I found it very striking and began to enjoy looking at his colourful work.

Chagall's style of working is very unusual, such as painting the head upside down, making the body shape curve, painting people as green or pink. Why does he do this? Show emotion? Expression?

Julien Opie

Julien Opie's work is very different to many Artist's work. He doesn't add much detail, just simple lines to show the face shape and where the mouth and nose are. I think the bright colours that he uses behind the faces, and the colour of the t-shirt, or the hair makes the piece stand out and makes it eye catching.
I do like his work but I think they look better when there's a group of them, rather than just one. With the coloured background on a handful of them, they make each other stand out and makes you want to look at them for longer.

The stress begins!!

Today is basically a 'music in, world out' sorta day. Read through my brief with Dave and everyone to try and understand everything. The brief is so much easier to understand now and I know what I need to do and what to achieve, however my brain is deciding to switch off,(it never does this!) So need a little time to get into a routine, and to make my brain do some work.

Had a couple hours free in the afternoon to do what I needed to do, so I went to the library to get some graphic books to help me understand more on branding, companies and corporate identity.

For the last couple of hours, we got Rachael's Brief which I am looking forward to! Love illustration and the ability to create work with any media and techniques. Should be fun!

More homework though! 3 artists for next week. Bring it on!

First Blog

My name is Sophie Worsfold and I have been interested in  Art and Design. I like to hand render my work, like using watercolour and pencils. I also like illustration and using photoshop to then edit my work and make it look professional.

This is an illustration that is created by Beaucoupzero. I have added this image because I love the range of colour that has been used and the detail with the lines and patterns. I also like how   there is something new that you see the longer you look at it.
